In Breton popular beliefs, fairies hold a prominent place. Associated with the world of the dead, they were feared by peasants who took care never to clear paths supposedly inhabited by fairies nor the places where hawthorn, their favoured plant, grew. Beneficent or malevolent, some could take the form of eels known for their melodious song, while others haunted old castles and commanded the beeches.

The medallion is composed of a fairy at the centre of a Breton stone fountain. She is surrounded by bellflowers and hawthorns, two plants from Breton flora.

In popular Breton folklore, the spirits of the dead were closely linked to those of the living. This procession of souls, called Anaon, populated everyday life and roamed freely through fields, deserted paths, and houses. Its presence required rituals meant to avoid disturbing their procession and to ensure their goodwill.
